Question 1

What can I use instead of heat tape for sublimation?

Accepted Answer

For suitable polyester fabric, a low-tack, sublimation-compatible repositionable spray can help hold the paper. On rigid coated blanks, heat-resistant sublimation tape often remains the best paper anchor. A silicone pad or sleeve may add pressure, but will not automatically anchor loose transfer paper.

Question 2

Is Kapton tape a substitute for sublimation heat tape?

Accepted Answer

Some polyimide or Kapton-style tapes have high published heat ratings, but ratings alone do not establish whether they leave adhesive or marks on your blank. Use products verified for the exact sublimation process; standard PTFE plumbing thread tape is not a transfer-paper adhesive.

Question 3

Do silicone pads replace heat tape?

Accepted Answer

No. Silicone pads and press pillows help control pressure or support an uneven pressing surface. They do not reliably attach paper to a blank. Use the specified transfer-holding method first.

Question 4

Do I still need heat tape with a shrink sleeve?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. JPPlus instructs users to position the design with heat tape before applying its sublimation shrink sleeve. Follow the particular blank and sleeve instructions rather than assuming the sleeve alone prevents movement.

Question 5

What if I have no heat-resistant tape?

Accepted Answer

For a compatible polyester fabric, a spray specifically rated for sublimation transfers may be suitable. For mugs and other hard blanks requiring tape, obtain the correct heat-resistant sublimation tape rather than substituting household glue or office tape.

Question 6

Can I use spray adhesive on mugs and tumblers?

Accepted Answer

Do not assume fabric-safe spray is approved for hard coated blanks. Supplier guidance usually positions low-tack adhesive spray as a fabric option and heat tape as a hard-blank option. Check both the adhesive and blank manufacturer before any exception.

Question 7

Can I use regular tape instead of heat tape?

Accepted Answer

No. Ordinary clear, masking and painter's tapes may release or leave residue at sublimation temperatures. Use a heat-resistant adhesive approved for the blank and process.

Question 8

Can magnetic sheets or clips hold sublimation transfers?

Accepted Answer

Not as a general method. Many ceramics and aluminum blanks are not magnetic, and clips may interfere with press closure or mark the item. Use only purpose-designed, heat-rated fixtures whose manufacturer documents that exact application.
